Review: BlowFish For Hangovers

Jan 26, 12 Review: BlowFish For Hangovers

There’s a new kid in town who fancies he can get rid of the morning after. No, not THAT morning after. We mean hangovers. We all like to drink and occasionally (or way too often) we indulge a bit too much. We always end up paying for the morning after, but, what if we didn’t have to?

If you’ve been paying attention (you lush) – We recently covered the Mercy Hangover Prevention drink. However you may be the type to make mistakes and not regret it until the next day. After all, who PLANS to get a hangover? Well today it’s us. We wanted to try out Blowfish, which has been called the “Silver Bullet” for hangovers. In order to do that, we had to get a little crazy…

The Quest for Testing

We got several samples of Blowfish and we handed them out to several friends, coworkers, and family members with a single mission. Go out, Friday Night, and get a little too drunk. Strangely enough it wasn’t that hard to recruit everyone around us to test this out. With the number of samples on-hand we managed to get a pretty broad spectrum of responses and utilization.

Personally we ran them through our classic ringer of half a bottle of Tanqueray Gin, and a few cheap beers to make sure we get past the tipping point. Sometimes our jobs are just AWFUL by the way. Other people ran the gauntlet from a 12 pack of coors to a night of crazy tequila shots. So we got ya covered.

The Morning – How Cruel

The morning after I woke up pretty solidly hungover. Irritable, with a headache and a sour stomach. I reached immediately for the Blowfish I put near my bed and dropped them into a medium sized glass of water. After waiting a painful minute for it to dissolve I downed the whole thing and forced myself to get out of bed.

As I puttered around the house I waited to see how well this would take effect. The stomach calming effect was almost instant, but my head pain and sleepiness were not going away. Just having some relief was definitely a boon and I proceeded to wait and read a brochure those nice Mormon kids are always slipping under my door (it’s like they KNOW).  Soon enough, my head cleared a bit and I felt a good bit more alert. I started on making some breakfast and before you know it I was whipping up food for the whole household. I was actually in a good mood!

Science… Really?

The concept behind Blowfish is simple, and usually the best inventions are. It looks JUST like Alka-Seltzer. Two big white chalky tablets that you drop into water, that pop and fizz and create a bubbly brew for you to chug. And like Alka-Seltzer it contains sodium bicarbonate which is a known stomach settling agent. So there’s no mystery there. Along those same lines, it contains Aspirin and Caffeine in moderate doses as well. That’s it. You could just take alka-selzter, 2 aspirin, and a cup of coffee and you’d be getting EVERYTHING that’s in there. So why bother? For one, it’s cheaper to have it all in the same convenient package. Also, coffee can make your stomach worse, ditto for energy drinks. To top it off, if you believe the maniac-geniuses over at blowfish. You also get the effects of all these things ‘faster’ due to dissolving it in water.

Truth and Consequences and Gin

We interviewed a few people who had similar experiences and we even tried a set of Blowfish with no particular hangover, just to see how it is when we’re un-tainted with the juniper juice. (Curse you Tanqueray!). The reports are surprisingly good. Ranging from “it helped a little” to “it helped a whole helluva lot”. Our experience was much the same. It does seem to be a quick, effective weapon against hangovers. It won’t wipe it out entirely in every case but it seems to generally help in all the right areas.

Blowfish is small and convenient enough to keep in your pocket, relatively inoffensive to the taste and fast working. We’d have no problem with having some on hand at all times, just for those nights where we don’t plan ahead. Please remember to drink responsibly and don’t use this to form a crippling booze habit because you’ve ‘beat the system’ there’s no magic at work here, but clear and simple science that anyone can depend on to cover up your (hopefully) infrequent binges. Cheers!
